Running Points System

Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, alongside her teammates, is set to participate in the 2024 World Junior Badminton Championship featuring a new point system akin to "running points." The historical milestones of the 2024 Macau Open set the stage for an exciting journey for Team Vietnam.

Team Vietnam has embarked on a journey to Nanning, Guangxi, China, to compete in the Suhandinata Cup - the World Junior Badminton Championship, taking place from September 30 to October 13, 2024. The team, led by coach Ngo Trung Dung, comprises talented players such as Nguyen Van Mai, Tran Quoc Khanh, Pham Van Truong, Le Minh Son, Tran Thi Anh, Bui Bich Phuong, Nguyen Vu Ngoc Tran, and Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen.

In the mixed team event, Team Vietnam finds itself in Group H alongside Thailand, the United States, the Philippines, and Portugal. The teams will compete in a round-robin format to determine the top team advancing to the next round. Team Vietnam's initial matches will see them facing the United States and Thailand on September 30.

The introduction of the "running points" system aims to provide a greater opportunity for emerging badminton nations to challenge traditional powerhouses. This innovative scoring system, first introduced at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, features a unique format where consecutive matches build on the previous score, creating an unpredictable and thrilling competition.

Renowned former Chinese player turned coach, Chen Jin, expressed enthusiasm for the new scoring system, highlighting its potential to level the playing field and enhance the competitive spirit among teams. The system, designed for mixed team events, revolutionizes the conventional scoring method, offering a fresh and dynamic experience for players and spectators alike.

Key features of the "running points" system include incrementally building on scores from previous matches, ensuring fair play and intensifying the competitiveness throughout the tournament. With specific rules governing the number of matches, consecutive play limitations, and pre-match draw procedures, the system adds an element of strategy and excitement to the game.

As Team Vietnam vies for excellence at the 2024 World Junior Badminton Championship under the innovative "running points" system, the stage is set for a showcase of talent, determination, and sportsmanship. With Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen leading the charge, the team aims to make a mark on the badminton world and embrace the challenges and opportunities the new scoring system brings.
