Shetty's remarkable comeback victory has secured him a spot in the semis, showcasing his incredible talent on the badminton court.
Despite dropping the opening game, the young Indian shuttler showcased an impressive recovery to stage a comeback and clinch the win with a scoreline of 16-21, 21-19, 21-14 against Kidambi in the quarterfinals. Shetty expressed his emotions post-match, stating, "It feels amazing to reach the semis here. It's my first time competing in the Taipei Open and I am satisfied with my performance."
During a crucial phase in the second game, Yang managed to turn the tables from trailing 18-15 to leading 19-18. However, Shetty demonstrated a surge of determination, scoring three consecutive points to secure the win and shift the momentum decisively in his favor.
"The win in the second game boosted my confidence. That's when I started to play more aggressively and accelerate well, which really set me on the right track," the 20-year-old stated. "I aim to go further and continue to progress. These victories are instilling a lot of belief in my playing style."
Next up, Shetty faces his toughest challenge yet – the hometown hero and top seed, Chou Tien Chen, who overcame Moh Zaki Ubaidillah of Indonesia with a thrilling 16-21, 21-18, 21-19 victory. Meanwhile, in the women's singles, Pitchamon Opatniputh emerged victorious against former junior world champions, Riko Gunji, ending a two-year wait to reach the semifinals at the World Tour.
Opatniputh expressed her joy, mentioning, "I've struggled with injuries for the past two years and often faltered in the early rounds. Reaching the semis once again is an incredible feeling, it truly boosts my confidence." Notably, Opatniputh's previous World Tour semifinal also took place in Taipei in 2023, the same year she won the Junior Championships in Spokane, USA. Gunji clinched the Junior Championships title four years earlier in Kazan, Russia.
