In the world of badminton, the mixed doubles pair of Lauren Smith and Marcus Ellis have made headlines not for their on-court achievements but for their heartwarming decision to retire at the end of this year. However, their reason for stepping away from the sport is one of joy – to fully dedicate their time to their upcoming child. As they welcomed Christmas in their new home in Carlisle, the couple shared the exciting news of expecting their first child.
The duo's final showdown took place at the European Championship in April, and since relocating from the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes two months ago, they have been transitioning into a new phase, balancing being athletes and soon-to-be parents.
Reflecting on the festive season, Lauren Smith remarked, "This year feels very different for many reasons. It's our first Christmas without COVID-19, and we are building our family. We both realize this is our last Christmas just for us, so we are trying to cherish our time together before our lives change next year."
For Ellis, an Olympic silver medalist, this shift also marks a profound change, signaling a period of anticipation and preparation. "We've thought a lot about what Christmas next year will be like with a little one. It's something we want to do, but having a child will shift priorities," he explained.
In their new abode, the couple is settling into life, albeit Ellis admitting they are still "living somewhat apart" while finalizing last-minute tasks. Smith's Christmas wishlist focuses on baby items such as a crib, changing table, and essentials for newborns, alongside preparing memory books to document the pregnancy journey and early years of their child.
Balancing pregnancy with the holiday season presents challenges, yet Smith tackles the changes with her athlete's discipline. She mentioned, "I always try to stay active during Christmas because the tournaments are in January, so being pregnant hasn't changed much. Of course, I'm a bit less active, but keeping moving makes me comfortable."
Smith also pays attention to adjusting her pace amidst the festive buzz. "There's a lot going on, and I've definitely said no to some things. Hosting seven people on Christmas Day is a big task, so I take plenty of time to rest and nap when I can."
Food is a particular focus for Smith this year, especially with pregnancy cravings. "One of my cravings is cheese, which is tricky because you can't have soft or moldy cheese. But there are other good things I can eat in moderation," she laughed. Another passion? "Irn-Bru. It's full of things 'not good,' so I've portioned it out, but I'll treat myself to a glass on Christmas Day."
Looking ahead, the duo has planned new traditions to suit their growing family and their dog, Luna. Smith shared, "We hope to start a tradition of family walks on Boxing Day, hopefully with good weather, and with the dogs."
Next year, they envision a magical Christmas full of wonder through the eyes of a child. Smith expressed her excitement, saying, "This will be the beginning of new traditions and bringing Santa's magic back." However, this year's celebration focuses on family. She said, "The most meaningful thing is having family with us and making their time here special. It's our first Christmas with family at home, and we hope it's the first of many more to come. It's incredibly special to be close to family, with Marcus, and preparing for what's to come."
As Lauren Smith and Marcus Ellis prepare to embark on the journey of parenthood, this Christmas marks a unique celebration filled with anticipation and joy for the forthcoming changes in their lives. Despite bidding adieu to their badminton careers, the couple looks forward to a different yet fulfilling Christmas alongside the warm embrace of family and the promise of new beginnings in the New Year.
