Vietnamese badminton players have shown great prowess at the Taiwan Badminton Open 2024 qualifiers, setting the stage for an exciting tournament. Vũ Thị Trang, Phạm Thị Diệu Ly, Phạm Thị Khánh, and other talented players have displayed impressive performances in the early rounds of the competition.
Vũ Thị Trang, seeded fourth in the women's singles qualifiers, faced a tough opening match against Peng Yu Wei of Taiwan. The skilled player from North Vietnam, representing Ho Chi Minh City, emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter, winning 21-19, 12-21, 21-13. Trang continued her winning streak by defeating Yang Yu-Chi to secure a spot in the women's singles main draw. In the first round, she will face off against Indonesian opponent Bilqis Prasista, setting the stage for an intriguing clash of experience versus youth.
In the women's doubles qualifiers, Phạm Thị Diệu Ly and Phạm Thị Khánh faced a formidable challenge against the second-seeded Taiwanese pair of Yu Jung Lai and Sung Yu-Hsuan. The Vietnamese duo showcased their skills and determination, clinching a hard-fought victory with a score of 21-18, 15-21, 21-18. Subsequently, Diệu Ly and Khánh defeated another Taiwanese pair, Tsai Ruo Lin and Wang Yi Zhen, advancing to the main draw where they will meet the strong Taiwanese duo of Su Yu Chen and Jiang Yi-Hua.
The men's and mixed doubles categories also saw Vietnamese representation, with pairs like Phạm Văn Hải and Thân Vân Anh, and Trần Đình Mạnh and Nguyễn Đình Hoàng facing tough opponents from Taiwan. Despite their best efforts, the Vietnamese players faced stiff competition and were unable to secure victories, dampening the overall success for Vietnam on the first day of the tournament.
In a disappointing turn of events, Lê Đức Phát suffered a heartbreaking loss in the men's singles main draw, falling to Marcellyno of Indonesia in a closely contested match. Veteran player Nguyễn Tiến Minh also faced a tough defeat against the fifth-seeded Tarun Reddy Katam from India in the men's singles qualifiers, reflecting the challenges encountered by the Vietnamese contingent at the tournament.
As the Taiwan Open serves as the final tournament before the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris 2024, the Vietnamese badminton players face a significant opportunity to fine-tune their skills and gain valuable experience. While the results may not have been entirely favorable on the first day of the qualifiers, the strong performances of players like Vũ Thị Trang and Phạm Thị Diệu Ly indicate a promising future for Vietnamese badminton on the international stage.
