Vietnamese badminton player Vũ Thị Trang showcased her resilience by defeating an opponent ranked over 100 places above her to advance to the quarterfinals of the prestigious Kaohsiung Masters 2024.

During the round of 16 at the women's singles event of the Kaohsiung Masters 2024 - a Super 100 tournament held in Taiwan on June 21st, Vũ Thị Trang faced the 33-year-old Taiwanese star Yu Po Pai, currently ranked 30th in the world. Yu Po Pai, a top-four player from Taiwan on the international stage, recently reached the semifinals of the Australian Open 2024, a Super 500 event, proving her competitive prowess against top Asian players preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

In the previous round, Vũ Thị Trang, hailing from Bac Giang but representing Ho Chi Minh City, displayed outstanding performance to eliminate the 68th-ranked player Hsiang Ti Lin from Taiwan. Despite facing tough resistance as Hsiang Ti Lin rallied from an 11-6 deficit to level at 11-11, Vũ Thị Trang demonstrated her composure and ultimately secured victory with a scoreline of 21-17.

Continuing her winning streak, Vũ Thị Trang outplayed her higher-ranked opponent in the next match. She dominated the second game by establishing an early lead of 9-2, extending it to 18-6 with a commanding performance. Although Hsiang Ti Lin attempted a late comeback, reducing the gap to 19-12, Vũ Thị Trang swiftly sealed the match with a final score of 21-12, leaving her opponent behind by over 100 spots in the rankings.

Unfortunately, other Vietnamese pairs bid farewell to the Kaohsiung Masters 2024 after the round of 16 matches. The women's duo Phạm Thị Diệu Ly and Phạm Thị Khánh faced defeat against the Taiwanese pair Ya Ching Hsu and Chiao-Yun Liu with a score of 10-21, 17-21. Similarly, the men's pair consisting of Trần Đình Mạnh and Nguyễn Đình Hoàng succumbed to the local favorites Cheng Kuan Chen and Sheng Fa Chen, losing 13-21, 11-21.
