Former world number 1 badminton player, Tai Tzu-ying, made an unexpected exit from the women's singles semifinals of the Japan Open 2024 due to a knee injury. This setback comes on the heels of her departure from the international stage after the Olympic 2024 singles final against He Bing Jiao.

Entering the Japan Open 2024, a Super 750 event in Yokohama, Tai Tzu-ying struggled with a persistent knee issue. Despite leading 15-5 in the first game against Natsuki Nidaira of Japan, she aggravated her left knee while attempting to retrieve a net shot, eventually requiring medical treatment. Despite the setback, Tai Tzu-ying, the top seed at the tournament, managed to secure a spot in the semifinals by overcoming her Japanese opponent 21-13, 21-14 in just 43 minutes. However, on Friday, the Taiwanese player made the tough decision to withdraw from the competition, a move officially confirmed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Saturday.

In a statement, Tai Tzu-ying expressed surprise at reaching the semifinals and discussed her determination to recover from the injury upon returning to Chinese Taipei. Ranked 18th on the BWF World Tour rankings, Tai Tzu-ying's focus now shifts to her recovery and hopes that the knee injury is not severe. The Japan Open marked her first tournament since being eliminated by Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand at the Paris Olympics.

Despite her withdrawal, Tai Tzu-ying's performance in the semifinals is anticipated to boost her ranking to number 3 globally in the latest standings, especially in the absence of top players like An Se-young, Chen Yufei, and Carolina Marin. An Se-young is embroiled in a conflict with the Korean Badminton Association following her Olympic triumph, while Chen Yufei announced an indefinite break after her quarterfinals exit in Paris. Meanwhile, the 31-year-old Spanish star, Carolina Marin, is yet to set a return date following an ACL injury in Paris, a setback that could potentially hasten her retirement plans.

Tai Tzu-ying's unexpected withdrawal from the Japan Open 2024 due to a knee injury has cast a ripple effect across the badminton community, impacting the global rankings and the absence of key players in upcoming tournaments. As she focuses on her recovery and comeback, the badminton world eagerly anticipates her return to form on the court.
