The Malaysia Open 2025 faced a setback when the Axiata Arena's indoor stadium suffered a roof leak during the matches on January 7, 2025. This unexpected incident disrupted the badminton games and raised concerns regarding player safety and facility maintenance.
To address this issue, a team of ten members from the Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM) and contractors have been assigned to work round the clock throughout the Malaysia Open 2025 to ensure that the roof leak at Axiata Arena does not recur. In a statement, PSM mentioned that the Public Works Department (JKR) and contractors are collaborating on necessary repairs currently underway. "PSM has identified problematic areas and is carrying out the required maintenance," stated PSM.
Moreover, PSM has issued a public apology to all parties involved, particularly the organizers and badminton fans, for the roof leak incident that disrupted the opening matches of the tournament, leading to some matches having to be temporarily halted. The leak caused water to drip onto the court's surface, forcing organizers to cover wet areas with black cloth to ensure player safety.
In response to this unforeseen circumstance, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced that certain matches have been rescheduled for the tournament's second day, on January 8, 2025, as part of the Super 1000 competition. Matches affected include the men's singles match on Court 3 between H.S. Prannoy of India and Brian Yang of Canada, as well as the men's doubles match between Rasmus Kjaer/Frederik Sogaard of Denmark and Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani of Indonesia.
The incident at the Axiata Arena during the Malaysia Open 2025 serves as a reminder of the importance of regular facility maintenance and swift action in resolving structural issues to ensure the smooth conduct of sporting events. The cooperation between stakeholders, including PSM, JKR, contractors, and BWF, highlights the dedication to providing a safe and reliable environment for athletes and spectators alike in the world of badminton.
